Reimagining how BAFTA members view award entries

BAFTA is a world-renowned organisation celebrating excellence in Film, Games, and Television. BAFTA View was a transformative project to modernise the awards voting process.

As Lead Product Designer, I worked closely with BAFTA stakeholders to create a new user experience that prioritises accessibility, performance, and fairness. The platform supports a wide variety of artwork sizes, cast lists, and synopses, maintaining equal emphasis on all entries to prevent bias.

The results are impactful: BAFTA View achieved a 98% adoption rate during the EE Film Awards 2022, streamlining the awards voting process and delivering a modern, intuitive user experience. Delivered on time and on budget, the platform laid the foundation for further technical advancements, including Fire Stick support, and now underpins BAFTA's Film, Games, Television, and Television Craft awards.

Problem

  • BAFTA relied on DVD screeners and in-person screenings for award voting, leading to inefficiencies and high costs.
  • Accessibility was limited, excluding some members from easily engaging with the process.
  • A fair and user-friendly platform was needed to streamline voting while supporting diverse digital and accessibility requirements.

Approach

Discovery and Research

  • Ran a discovery workshop to understand members' workflows and pain points, collaborating with stakeholders to define project goals.
  • Conducted extensive research to accommodate diverse entry formats and accessibility requirements, ensuring fairness across all award titles.
  • Collaborated with developers early to align on a React framework and preferred delivery structure for a smooth handoff.

Prototyping and Design

  • Created interactive wireframes in Axure before transitioning to high-fidelity designs in Figma.
  • Designed intuitive workflows, dynamic content filtering, and metadata displays tailored to BAFTA's requirements.
  • Developed a reusable UI kit and style guide, ensuring consistency across BAFTA's digital platforms.

Validation and Iteration

  • Ran usability tests to validate navigation and accessibility for diverse user needs, focusing on equal emphasis for all entries.
  • Iterated on designs based on feedback, ensuring compliance with WCAG standards and BAFTA's visual identity.

Outcome

  • Achieved a 98% adoption rate during the EE Film Awards 2022, transforming how BAFTA members accessed and evaluated award entries.
  • Received overwhelmingly positive feedback from BAFTA Members:
    • “The new BAFTA view has been streamlined into a system that makes accessing content simple and intuitive. Being able to filter by dates, game systems and category is perfect for what we needed when assessing games.”
    • “BAFTA View has a modern design that collates all the information related to each title, which makes it much easier to track and record my impressions on entered games”
    • “The revised BAFTA View is not only visually appealing, but also provides practical features that help to track status of entries. We particularly appreciate the ability to add games played alongside annotated notes, previously we had to cross reference a separate spreadsheet. Now this is conveniently all in one place!”
  • Delivered the project on time and within budget, with the platform's scalable design enabling BAFTA to support new award categories and features like Fire Stick compatibility in future iterations.

Feedback

I had the pleasure of working with Laszlo on BAFTA View, a key platform supporting BAFTA's awards processes. Laszlo demonstrated exceptional creativity and attention to detail, delivering designs that balanced usability with BAFTA's exacting standards. His ability to adapt and refine his work based on user feedback was impressive, consistently providing thoughtful solutions to complex challenges.

Laszlo was a joy to collaborate with—professional, proactive, and always open to ideas. Thanks to his contributions, BAFTA View is a sleek, modern, and highly effective system that exceeds expectations. I would highly recommend him for any design role requiring creativity, technical skill, and a user-focused approach.
